Class details

This is a very delicate medium and very fine work can be done with it. Stumping powder (preferably black) is used here along with charcoal pencils and burnt sticks to obtain different effects. Texture of paper is very important and should be used sensibly.

The basic course of ten classes will help the student to get acquainted with:

  • The medium and the materials;
  • Basic masking techniques
  • tonal values and importance of arial and linear perspectives in painting.

Charcoal painting

You should always remember to work carefully as correction is very difficult . Another thing to keep in mind is that charcoals are difficult to do in humid weather and all care should be taken to avoid any contact with moisture at any stage of painting. Framing should be with glass or other protection. Fixatives if available, must be applied as soon as the project is completed. The above charcoal was done by Shilpa Shantaram

A simple landscape or still life will be done on handmade paper by students which will help in assessing their capabilities.
